A few lit candles of different heights on one tray change the mood of a room faster than any garland. Warm, flickering light creates a feeling that a cold ceiling light never will, and a concrete tray underneath keeps it from looking like a random pile of things.
One larger accent, like a planter with festive greenery such as fir or juniper branches, often works better than ten small decorations scattered around the room. The eye has somewhere to rest instead of darting between everything at once.

Decorations bought for a single season usually end up in a box in the attic. A concrete or microcement accent used for the holidays stays in your home afterwards: just remove the seasonal additions, and the piece carries on as everyday decor.
